Puddle-crossers

After a day of particularly heavy rain in Sydney last week, rainwater collected in a section of this pedestrian overpass and turned it into a four-sided lake. About 3 to 4cm deep all around, and wider across than a track-and-field olympian could long-jump, this was quite the aqueous obstacle.

Because being unemployed gives you opportunities to do things that you never used to have time for, I stopped to watch how people reacted to the obstacle...

Most pedestrians, upon spotting the little lagoon, stopped dead in their tracks before noticing a nearby flight of stairs. The stairs took them down to street level, allowing them to pass right underneath the mini-flood situation. Then there were were those who just stared at the pond as if the heat from their intense gazes would evaporate the water that was so defiantly blocking their way. And there were others who chose to plow right through the water, unfazed by moisture that seeped into their footwear. Still others decided to take the unconventional route around it, hopping up onto the wall and exercising circus-worthy balance to make sure they avoided puddle on one side and pavement two stories below on the other side.

I ended up taking the stairs myself... I'm curious how you would you have tackled the puddle!

  1. Being a Vancouverite you must have rain boots.

    Splish, splash, fun!

  2. I actually don't own a pair of rain boots in either Vancouver or Sydney. But after a week of getting drenched in the pouring rain, investing in a pair of gumboots might not be a bad idea!
